HMP Full Sutton bought the RS2 to record planned removals in cells. Steven Martel, Use of Force Co-ordinator, said, "a high security prison regularly uses hand held cameras when moving recalcitrant prisoners from one area of the prison to another." This meant that one of the officers present at a removal was only there to hold the camera.
"After a HMPCIP report they felt that by the Supervising Officer wearing a body worn camera system it would afford extra protection to the team of officers from litigation," said Martel. Body worn camera systems have proven to successfully reduce the number of complaints against police officers. It was hoped the same would be true for prison officers at HMP Full Sutton. After only a short amount of time, Martel reports that "this has been proven with fewer complaints being made by prisoners."
He found there was an additional benefit to wearing the RS2. He said, "also with the video screen on show the Prisoners are realising that they are being filmed." This has been a long proven benefit of body worn cameras and is the reason Reveal Media manufactures cameras with front facing screens.
It is not only in public that the screen is beneficial. In prisons too, "this has led to them [the prisoners] demonstrating behaviour of a more compliant nature."
